Off the Table is an ongoing character design project and a 300+ episode webcomic about the daily lives the elements of the periodic table (and other chemical species!) where each character reflects the chemical and physical properties of the molecule they are based on with their appearance and personality.
As an comic artist with a background in anime-inspired art and character design, I am interested in the potential for 'personification' to communicate science concepts to a younger or alternative audience.
The Off the Table project began in 2013 where I became interested in the unique properties of the elements - which seemed, to me, like people with individual personalities! Afer creating much of the main cast and settling on a high school sci-fi setting, I began drawing the comic portion of the project in 2015 which is archived now but still available to read. The characters were redesigned in 2021, which is the version you see now. I was particularly inspired by the appeal of childrens animation such as Steven Universe, Pretty Cure, and Monster High, and the relatability of a school setting.
This site is hosted by Neocities, which is an amazing website-making tool that I would totally reccomend to anyone looking to make their own website. I am also using Rarebit, which is an amazing, free, open-source webcomic template.
